Planning - final production schedule

PRODUCTION SCHEDULE

Days; Everyone in our group doesn't have college on Fridays therefor, filming production can be taken from 12am and onwards. We will probably film in downhills park, depending on the type of scenery we're looking for. This is so, the footage is filmed in the daylight as it gets dark soon.

Also, on the Saturdays that everyone is free, we are able to film from 11am to around 5pm. The scenes that are going to be shot in a bedroom would have to be in cheinaz's house and therefor won't be a long journey as everyone lives quite near.

On Tuesdays from 12.15am to 3.45pm we can film in the college's hallways as everyone is free in that time slot.

Planning- Pitch Evaluation

PITCH EVALUATION

From the feedback we have received, I have taken deep thought into this, as there were a lot of questions asked to us especially how I should improve and we will have to meet this.

We have come up with 3 targets:

  1. Our actors will have to act out exactly what will be in our final storyboard, this will mean that as there will be more characters to do this, we will have to get them without fail.
  2. Our production schedule, we will follow this, as all of us are free at this time, we will have to turn up.
  3. We will have to add in all our props, the props that we have included in our pitch presentation might be hard to get but we will get them, includes fake blood, makeup etc.

PLANNING- PITCH FEEDBACK

Pitch Feedback.

As we presented our official pitch to our class to give them a basic understanding of what our film opening and the designs will be about, they gave their feedback, asked us questions, therefore we answered them to the best of our understanding.

Research - Fonts For Our Titles

We have decided that we will keep our titles in the font shown above, this is because it matches our genre which is horror and it may be effective in catching the audiences eye. We have also agreed to keeping the name of our film 'Footsteps'.

OUR PITCH (cheinaz cordeiro)

Powered by emaze

SWOT Analysis.

Strengths - Our groups main strength is that we have worked really hard on trying to find an idea for the film opening as well as looking at similar movies such as 'Purge' and came up with good ideas that match our genre, horror. We researched about different type of things the movie 'Purge' had to get an idea from it. Another strength of ours was that we spoke about each scene in detail making it easier for us to film this helped us in ways
such us not wasting time on talking about scenes while filming. One scene we discussed most about was when the victim hunts back the bullies and were we use a false plateau to shock the audience.

Weakness -  One of our weaknesses is each individual in the group lives far away from each other so finding a location to film on a weekend is consumes a lot of time as we have to figure out what place is good as well as close to everyone in the group. Another weakness is that we have no evidence of planning or finding locations. Also having set dates to finish off work puts pressure on the group.

Opportunities - Working in a group gave me the opportunity to get close with people in my class and become friends with them as I like working with them. I also got the opportunity to learn new editing skills from my group and the teachers. Also using creative visual apps such as Prezi helps me to focus more on the visual to being creative and less writing.

Threats - I felt unconfident when writing blogs or wanting to write blogs because of not knowing what to write about as well as making it creative. Also as it is my first time editing I have no editing skills and the same for my group so we feel as that our film opening may be basic compared to peoples that have a little experience in editing.

Planning: Why is sound so important

Importance of sound

What is Sound: Sound is anything we hear in relation to a film.
What is Soundscape: This is the overall sound environment.
What is Sound design: This is the process of creating, recording and mixing all the sounds.
What is 'Suspending Belief': Forgetting that you are watching a film, feeling like you are there.

The two types of sound:

Diegetic Sound - Sound which the audience can hear but the characters in the film cannot hear.
Non Diegetic Sound - Sound which the characters in the film can hear, for example, an explosion.

Screening without sound made the title sequences seem boring and less interesting, one example was the 'The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3', the scene seemed plain and not enough engagement with he audience making everything confusing
Afterwards, we screened with sound which made a total difference as it built up tension making you want to watch it more this proves that the importance of sound is a lot in a film as it can make it more entertaining.

Research/planning: Favourite film

As we can see, in the title sequence of  Creed. It is straightforward as it begins with the film name like most of  the movies, it's written in the block letter format with shades making it look dark and  as we know 'Creed' is the family name, this can mean that the family have a dark and maybe a stressful pass, the sound in the background gets louder and louder building tension.
When showing the cast, beside their name, its also showing a picture of who they are and what they look like, also you get an idea of the movie as the the pictures show boxing rings and some scenes showing the main character getting ready for a fight. although, this is different to our movie i would like the title sequence to be similar as i thought it is very appealing.

Planning- Risk Assessment (Briando)

Risk Assessment

People- The risk that we may encounter are strangers in the park or on the streets as its a public place, so we will need to be as quite as possible to not interrupt anyone, we will have to try not to cause other issues towards anyone.

Equipment- Equipment, we will have full responsibility of the cameras and other equipment, if its lost, stolen or broken we will be fully responsible, this means that we will have to be careful with our equipment.

Weather- If its raining, we won't be able to use our equipment as it can get damaged.
If its foggy, the view may not be clear.

Meeting- As we have decided to add more people into our film, if they don't arrive, this could be a problem.

Planning- Final Storyboard (Khamroul)

 Final Storyboard

This is our final storyboard, these are most of the scenes of the film that will be shown.

PLANNING: mise-en scene (cheinaz cordeiro)

Mise-en-scene is the arrangement of scenery and stage properties in a play or film. Depending on the different scenes included, the location changes as the title sequence progresses. Due to our genre of horror, props and lightening is crucial in order for us to conceive a specific reaction from the audience in order to maintain their focus throughout the sequence. Furthermore, our sequence 'footsteps,' is based on a girl (Cheinaz Cordeiro) who faces a troubled life and therefor lives in a bad neighbourhood. So alternatively, I've decided that a park or in general, the streets/suburbs would be a good location to start of at. This would bring realism to the sequence which could potentially make the audience more likely to feel connected to our title sequence, as they're able to relate it to their day to day life. In the park, bullying from the gang of hoodlums could be taken place here as it adds more tension to the scenery as horror movies tend to rely heavily on the manipulation of formal elements—the control of perspective.

We would also use scenes in the toilet perhaps in a school to give it the connotation that she prefers being in there as long as she's not in her bullies sight and infant decides to commit suicide while she's at it. Suicide is a very serious matter that generally has a emotion story behind this action so this makes the audience feel sympathetic towards the protagonist (Cheinaz Cordeiro) and therefor longs for more scenery. Later on when our protagonist is back as a ghost, another location would be in the school corridors, as the boys(bullies)would be walking down and at the far end while she would be looking direct at them but then disappears. This adds suspense towards the audience and therefor makes our sequence eye-catching as she(Cheinaz Cordeiro) stalks them in order to see them suffer as much as she did in her pre days and because of the fear, the boys tend to run away.

When our protagonist commits suicide, a knife will be shown with blood to add realism to the killing and in fact makes them question, why was taking her own life necessary? which keeps them entertained and therefor would want to watch the film. Its interesting because even though suicide has negative connotation, that is what horror movies aim to do, which is to create suspense and thrills. Knifes and blood have connotations of danger and death which shows dramatic irony and immediately draws the audience in.

We've decided that, when our protagonist is presented as a ghost,  grey and dull makeup will be crucial to make the audience feel frightened as it will appear more realistic and therefor can appeal to the audiences expectations in a horror film. In addition, she would also wear dark coloured clothes in order to convey a dangerous and threatening atmosphere even though she is generally a character the audience likes, as she was a innocent little girl who killed her life because of her bullies. This adds more tension and once again makes the audience hate the boys who are now in danger.

At the beginning of the title sequence, the lighting will be bright but dim to fit the connotations of a innocent girl which hows dramatic irony as she later commits suicide and becomes determined to serve revenge. The lightening will be very dull and dark to give it a mystery feel to it in order to reach the expectations of a horror film.

planning- Title Credits (Briando)

Title Credits

What will it look like?

Our genre is a Horror/Thriller so the text will be really simple and will mainly stay the colour black/ Red, because those are the colours you really symbolise with.

A type face is a particular design for a specific genre, so we will be using Alien Glow, for example:

This gives a Horror type feeling which is what we will need to convey to our audience.

How will the title credits integrate?

The text will fade in and eventually fade out, followed by another title credit doing the same thing. As it fades in the text will be buffering adding a bit of tension in the atmosphere. The title credit will contain the colours Red/Black.

Template of our titles

This will be our sub-headings or main titles throughout the title sequence.

And this will be the small text under the sub-headings and main titles throughout the title sequence.

Research- Analysing use of sound in film opening of my chosen genre.

Sound in Specific Film Opening of our Chosen Genre.

The reason why I have chosen the conjuring sound is because I want my film to be horror/thriller related as instruments will need to be used, as the text changes to someone else's name, there will need to be a loud note played, each sound could symbolise something.
At a specific point there is no sound played, there is only a rush of wind heard until a loud note i played, this was likely to be a piano.
Finally, I want my film sound to be more plain but loud, there will need to be instruments related to the conjuring film opening sound.

Planning - Mood Board

Mood Board Theme.

I've decided that mostly, our title sequence will be completely in black and white with elements of red to give it a more mysterious feel to it and as a result the audience would look for clues within the sequence instead of us giving it directly to them which would capture their attention and make it more successful. This adds to the genre of our film which is horror as black has negative connotations and is a mysterious colour associated with fear and the unknown. In addition red also connotes danger ad death which could be used as dramatic irony for the audience to find out clues.

Therefore I've created, mood boards in Microsoft Powerpoint in order to express my colour pattern of the genre horror.

Research/Planning: Analyse 2 film sequences

Nerve

Starting with a technology based film opening, every individual in the cast crew and the producers title card was designed in a way to make it look attractive and making it relate to social mmedi. Throughout the title sequence different images are shown to portray the internet feeling to the audience. This can help the audience have a little understand of what the movie could be about.
In the backround a fast paced pop music is being played. Seems like a band with a lead singer. Pop music can also relate to teens which can also be giving an idea of the movie. This title sequence is helpful as our movie is going to be about teens so we could maybe catch a few ideas from it.

Deadpool

The Deadpool title sequence begins with a loud 80s/90s pop/disco music being played, then all of a sudden the main character (deadpool) is shown in slow motion images of him fighting a gang. In the mis en scene we could see objects falling over for example coffee spilling, paper flying around, blood being splattered.
The credits for the people who took part in the film making, for example the cast, was written in block capital letters which relates to the movie being an action movie. Can also show how good the movie can be from the intro. As our film will be a hybrid of the genres action and horror i thought that 'Deadpool' would give us an idea for our film opening.

Our New Layout and Background

Our New Layout and Background.

This is our new layout, we made it narrow so it is less complicated for the viewer, they will understand the blogs clearly as the text is easily readable because it is divided.
As our genre is horror, we wanted our background to fit our genre and relate to our film, as our film is about a ghost girl, we put a girl in the background, this fits our blog background.

Research- Use of Sound in One Film Opening

Purge

The Official Platinum Dunes Film, 'The Purge' film opening has a lot of chemistry within it to make it appealing to the audience.
It all begins straight away with a cctv footage of a murder scene going on, a man randomly shoots a victim, then there is infared footage of a knife crime going on, in the background there is quiet classic tunes heard throughout, while it gets to the end, it gets louder, as the crime worsens.

Planning - Mood Board Theme

Mood Board Theme.

I've decided that mostly, our title sequence will be completely in black and white with elements of red to give it a more interesting and appealing look this will be effective as the audience will be furious to know whats going t happen in the dark scenes. This adds to the genre of our film which is horror as black red are associated with danger, blood and etc.

Therefore I've created, mood boards in Microsoft Powerpoint in order to express my colour pattern of the genre horror.

Planning: institution and distribution (Huseyin Burcak)

Platinum Dunes
is an American production company created in November 2001 by filmmakers Michael BayBrad Fuller, and Andrew Form. I have decided to choose Platinum Dunes as our groups institution. As a group we have decided to do a hybrid of two genres, action and horror. The reason for choosing Platinum Dunes is that it is known as a very successful production company and having Platinum Dunes as our institution will give a reason to the audience to watch the movie as they know Platinum Dunes produces good films.
Platinum Dunes is famous for films such as:
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
  • Purge.
  • Ouija.
  • Friday the 13th.
  • Pain and Gain.
  • The Hitcher.
  • Nightmare on Elm Street.

Planning: Audience Profile (Huseyin Burcak)

Based on our results from Gov.org.uk on the film known as 'Purge', I have decided to make an ideal person who is likely to watch the film:

Name: Jamie Sonner
Where They Live: Manchester
Age: 15-24
Class: Working Class/ Student
Occupation: Part Time Job (JD sports)
Personality Type: Intelligent, Funny.
Hobbies and Interests: Video Games, Films.
Brands they consume: Nike, Adidas.
Media they consume: Cinema, TV.

Planning- Film Idea. Representation (Khamroul Hasan)

Representation Of 'Footsteps'.

We will try to introduce our characters including myself in many ways possible, Cheinaz Cordeiro, playing the main role of 'Footsteps', she is seen walking into the college, no dialogue, just loud music in the background.
From what we know the other characters are the people in the gang, other people will be likely to be in the film playing different characters, for example her friend, who tries to give her emotional support.
From this point we don't have a proper understanding of who will play who, especially the hoodlums,

The main social groups that are evident in the film is the girl and the hoodlums, this is seen mostly throughout our film, other evident scenes in the film is her classmates, there may be other evident interactions within the film.

We may represent these social groups stereotypically, in my opinion, ethnic minorities would be a likely option to act for the hoodlums. We may try to challenge stereotypes by making everything seem different in the end, for example, the bullies may have changed.

Planning- Film Idea. Genre (Khamroul Hasan)

Genre of our Film

We have decided as a group that the the specific genre that our film 'Footsteps' is going to be thriller, the sub genre are going to be action and horror, the reason why we decided to choose action is because it is possible that there will be scenes of violence, not only that, horror, the reason for this is because we want to put the viewer in the characters position, trembling with fear, through the use of over the shoulder shots and first person shots.
Over the Shoulder Shot
First Person Shot

Which title sequences have inspired me:
  1. Purge
It is clear from the mis en scene that this opening sequence sets the mood for a thriller/horror due to the violent acts of crime such as murder that we see.
The jump/cut editing also creates a fast paced sequence, making the audience feel on edge and fitting with the thriller genre.
Another reason is because  there is a mixed contrast and dark colours that the film is going to be sinister, and therefore the target audience would probably be young adults.

     2. The Ward

As we also want our opening title sequence to have fit the spooky theme, the ward helps us get an understanding, as in the start a boat light in the distance shining on the barrel makes it look mysterious. The bright orange colour makes the production name stand out and the star like design  surrounding it makes it eye catching, we want our presented title to be similar to this, finally this is the first shot in the film, this establishing shot sets the scene and created a dark, unsettling mood in the film.

Planning- Film Idea. Title Sequence (Khamroul Hasan)

Our Film's Type Of Title Sequence

We have decided to make our title sequences' movement slow and discrete at the beginning and as it moves towards the end it fastens and the pace increases, we would also like to make the title sequence have a lot of movement in it so it looks classic, maybe a few colors but the words should manage to suit the mood of the film, this will allow the viewer to receive a meaning of the film, it could generalize the flow of the film, the speed of the title credits increasing will imply that the action has taken place and the main parts of the film is symbolized.

We might want to include moving images,
not only does it help blend in the text
with the words, but the moving images may
indicate certain scenes of our film.
The reason I want to ours to be closely
to this title sequence is because it relates
closely to action and maybe horror, instead
of using the prop of a gun, we have decided
to use other props such as baseball bats,
knives etc. We want the title credits to
be similar to this one.

Our group have decided to stick close to the ideas we have chosen as the chosen images are the same as the images we intend to use, moving image and how the style of font interconnects with the images in the back.

Planning- Groups Initial Creative Ideas

Initial Creative Ideas

As a group we had all decided who does what part of the pitch, this leads on to our main idea of the film, we decided through class lessons given to us especially through our Whatsapp group, the reason we made this group was to help us make group decisions as we don't see each other very often at college also because as we are going to be filming, we needed to arrange meetups to begin acting.
As it was very difficult for them to think of a plot, we decided to switch roles.
In the pitch we also nominated roles for each other, I decided to work on the film itself, the name, treatment, Genre, what title sequence it will be especially the representation.
Whilst, Cheinaz worked on the Institutional detail and Mis en Scene of the film.
Briando and Huseyin both worked on the official title credits, production schedule and risk assessment, the cinematic detail will be worked on ass a group, this is the official full storyboard and the animatic, this is blog task 41, in this we need to identify the camera and editing decisions also where the title will be placed.
As you should know Sound design and the audience detail tasks were completed by me and cheinaz, this works on the core target audience and how our film should be able to attract them, the sound design works on the specific diegetic and non- diegetc aspects of our film also how the title sequences should be able to influence sound design.

Planning- Film Idea. The Film (Khamroul Hasan)

The Film

What is the Title of the Film?
Treatment of the Film?

The film will be horror/action based about a girl (Cheinaz Cordeiro) who faces a troubled life, as she is in a bad neighborhood, her horrors worsen and worsen, a gang of hoodlums are her terrors, being bullied, day in, day out, she decides to make the most horrifying decision of her life, SUICIDE.

In the first few seconds of the opening title sequence, I would want the music to be slow and distorted as it gets to the end of the opening title sequence, I would want the music to be really loud and clear, this may symbolize the girls depression, slowly worsening, then it hits her, her death is close. The title credits should also be a bit weird at the start, the text should be fuzzy but see-able for the audience, however as it gets to the end the title credits should be clear and bold.

In the first 2 mins of the film, it begins as the girl walks into the college, she seems disturbed, right before she heads into the gate, from the corner of her eye, she sees a gang of hoodlums peering at her with angry look also a few nods, but she ignores them and heads to class.
As her lessons finish late, it gets dark, she takes the park route, while she is walking, more multiple footsteps are heard behind her, as she turns around, she gets knocked out, all we see is a dark screen, she wakes up in the cold rocky floor, at deep night, so she decides to make her way home, only knowing notifying the police could make it worse, throughout the next few weeks, the bullying continues, day in, day out, her life becomes a misery, this results in a scene of her committing suicide, as she is holding the knife, her worried look, then it switches to  a news reporter explaining the incident and a scene of the hoodlums going to jail, the reason they were caught was because a note was left explaining her miserable life of depression and hate.

Planning: Title Credits (Briando Vecaj)

Reseach: How can a film opening attract an audience?

screedbot.gif

Generally, I think that the mis-en-scene is the most important part in order to grab the full attention of the audience as it sets the arrangement of scenery and stage properties in a play. This makes the audience feel like they have some authority over the film as they're comfortable with whats taken place. For example, an audience who generally is fascinated by horror/thriller films, will be entertained by props such as knives or blood in an opening sequence.

The mis en scene includes the sound, props, location and scenery. All of these things can help intrigue the audience. For example if  using great sound effects, its more likely that the film is more enjoyable and realistic to watch.

In my opinion establishing shot are very important as it is used to keep the audience entertained throughout the corse of the movie and to be able to catch the audience attention at the first chance given to them. Establishing shots are used at the beginning of films in order to show the audience the basic context around the film. However you have to include factors that will grab and shock your audience to keep them engaged such as special effects. This gives the audience a basic understanding and contextual information which can help them get the most understanding from when the film begins.

An establishing shot is usually the first shot of a new scene, designed to show the audience where the action is taking place. It is usually a very wide shot or extreme wide shot.

Many film producers cherish the fact that the establishing shot is one of the most important parts in the opening of the film. This is because it is the first thing the audience is empowered by. Furthermore, this shows that if you have a powerful establishing shot, its more likely that you will create a  powerful film.

Research: Extension Task

The first person to use a title sequence at the beginning of a film was Thomas Edison, he did this by using a textboard, this was to show the company name that he represented also a copyright note.
However, during the development of title sequences, sound was a part of it, this also changed the opening titles, a change that was credited was that actors and auxiliaries were included in the title sequences.
The invention of TV led to people staying at home instead of going to the cinema, therefore film makers and title designers reinvented film media, this was with elaborated design opening titles, the purpose of this was to grab the attention of the audience.
Saul Bass was renowned for pioneering innovation, his importance then was followed with other great title designers such as Pablo Ferro and Maurice Binder, for many years they decided to set the standards for film title design.
New technical developments had created a 'new era', where 'superman' was the first digitally generated opening title sequence, superman had fascinated a numerous amount of audiences because it was multi-dimensional in many proven ways to be physically impossible.
In the early 1980s, computers with graphic user interfaces became available, this then, in the early 1990s created the first friendly software known as 'After Effects', these types of new tech made it easier for designers and directors to visualise their opening titles on the screen.
Typography in space had combined opening sequences in recent years, due to the expense of readability.
Across decades there were many similarities in opening title sequences, one was that some opening titles were designed to be a part of the cinematic space.
Finally, Woody Allen is a director who has completely reduced his opening titles making it more unique from the others, Kyle Cooper had several similar sequences, both of which were the same was 'Se7en' and 'Mimic'.

Planning: After Effects Ident

X-World Productions

Individually we had to create a Indent that will be used for our title sequence, i chose this design because the colours symbolises the theme Horror.

Planning- After Effects Idents

My Logo after using After Effects.

Firstly, I had created my logo on online logo maker, I had several ideas but in the end I nominated this specific logo, using the breaking of glass effect, i blended them together using after effects to make my final idea.

Planning: After effect ident

My idea was to call our production 'The Strike' as it can represent some of the scenes in my film idea, if the group does decides to carry on with my idea i would like to use the name 'The Strike' production. I used lines to go through the word 'Strike' to represent the word.

Planning: After effect ident.

Royal Pro Institution.

I decided to use a house colour themes of dull and dark colours in my logo such as red and black to evoke a dangerous atmosphere towards the audience. This draws the audience in and makes them want to find out more information. The cracks also add a feel of hell which ties in well with the genre of horror. I have really enjoyed creating a possible logo for our film.
