Research- BFI statistics.
As Table 5 shows, drama was the most popular genre for independent UK films, which made up the majority of UK film releases (87%). The £36 million earned by drama films (41 releases) represented 27% of the total box office for all UK independent films. Over half (53%) of the drama genre’s total box office was earned by the year’s top three UK independent drama releases – Suffragette, Far from the Madding Crowd and Macbeth. Biopic was the second highest earning genre with £32 million from three releases, and comedy was third with £24 million from 25 releases. Legend, the top earning biopic, accounted for 58% of the total box office for this genre, while the top earning comedy, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, accounted for 66% of this genre’s total gross.
Research- What is genre?
What is genre
Genre is used to group various types of art according to a predictable range of features and expectations. So if you go into a bookstore and buy a fantasy novel, you'll be expecting to read about an imaginary place with fairy tale elements such as wizards with supernatural powers and magic and not a non-fiction account of the Vietnam War.
Types of Genres
Genres can be found in all forms of art. Musical genres include rap, rock, country, metal and jazz. Literary genres include suspense, mystery, epic, romance, non-fiction and poetry. In fact, everything from painting, to sculpture to television to radio can be placed into distinct genres.
Mystery- It's really fascinating, as it consists of solving problems and could be related to any investigation type movies for example "Source Code".
Epic- Epic movies such as Lord of the rings, Harry Potter are one of the best franchise ever to be made, they usually make you want to be there at that moment.
Romance- Romance hooks you to the characters really quickly, as it is a romance people are falling in love so this brings you in even closer. An example of a romance is "Passenger".
Horror- Horror movies really get under your skin and gives chills down your spine, the thing that really gets you is the jump scares. An example of a horror movie is "Conjuring".
Comedy- Comedies are really hard to make as there are different types of comedies, comedy for the older audience and comedy for the younger audience; an example for an older audience is "Deadpool" because its really inappropriate for younger children aged 15 and below. An example for a younger audience is "Lego Movie".
Research- What are the 4 different types of film openings?
Film Openings
Animation
The use of animated text in the title sequences became more popular in the late 90s. The use of animation for a film opening requires a lot of digital technology and stylized editing suggesting the high budget required. An example of a title sequence would be "Vertigo".
Moving Images
This serves to offer either a metaphor or narrative thread to help introduce the tone or story line of the film to the audience. The moving images film opening combines the credit titles with moving images behind the titles, and sound for an effective impact.
The types;
When it comes to film openings there is more than one way a film can decide to show the openings of their film. The different types of film openings include:
•Still images
• Blank screen
•Moving images
•Animation

Still Images
Still Images;
Just like a photograph, a still image can be examined closely, and the audience can note body language or facial expressions to give clues as to the situation or the people within the situation. The still images film opening is more elaborate then simple white text on a black background like the blank screen.

Blank screens
My favorite is Blank Screen;
This is the most commonly used opening for low budget or psycho movies. The blank screen film opening involves different kinds of typeface on a black background. When blank screens are used for film openings, usually a white typeface is used on a black background to create a high contrast for the audience.

Research- Analyse 2 film title sequences, and list the order we see the tilte credits in, the length of the credits and the font styles and sizes used.
Creed is a really effective title sequence as it doesn't give too much away, but quick shots of the movie to show us a little review of what there is to come. The sound track is really nostalgic as its the theme tune of Rocky Balboa, and also stars Rocky Balboa himself. It starts of with the title of "CREED" in bold and the Rocky Balboa theme tune showing that its going to be a serious movie, as it may contain violent scenes, as it is related to boxing.

Deadpool is definitely one of the most outrageous title sequence I've witnessed, because it starts of with a still image of Deadpool in a upside down car, of him fighting them, then goes back to moving images, the soundtrack straight away tells us that its a comedy and also an action movie, which is a weird combination, but manage to work really well.

Research- What makes a good title sequence according to Kyle Cooper?
Who is Kyle Cooper?
Kyle Cooper is a very famous film opening designer and director. He has made a lot of well known film openings such as Se7en and Spiderman. He has directed over 150 film title sequences, and has been credited as single handedly revitalizing the main-title sequence as an art form.
what makes a good title sequence according to Kyle Cooper?
When making a film opening sequence having the actor act in front of a green screen can be a lot more effective than filming in a real location. Also Kyle Cooper believes that using handmade materials is better as it shows originality and suggest an imperfect atmosphere.
The opening sets an expectation for the rest of the film and makes you forget about everything besides the upcoming movie so they a very important aspect of a movie.
Relations
A film opening must relate to the film, it need to be relevant to the characters and the story line. A lot of good title sequences relate to a certain character's back story, it usually reveals an important part of their life.
Typography
According to Kyle Cooper the font of the movie needs to link well with the genre of the movie, for example a horror movie would need to include dark chilling writing to create a frightening atmosphere. If the font doesn't match the genre of the movie it can put off the audience, therefore you wouldn't use bright happy fonts in a horror movie as scary feeling would be lost. The typography should portray the story line, it should not be an afterthought as it is very important for a movie.

We have went to 'The screen on the green' to watch our title sequence in the Cinema.
I've also managed to get some feed back from our peers...

Blogging health check 3
Improvements I've made:
- I posted the evaluation questions as empty and i completed 6\7 questions, However i thought that i would post them all at once, thats why the blogs appeared to be empty. Ive fixed this problem and put them up despite the fact that one question is still not completed but will be by tomorrow.
- Ive also been going to workshops in lunchtimes and on fridays and tuesdays when i have a free day without any lessons.
Planning: new layout
New Layout
Ive decided that its best for our group, to have a wallpaper for our blogs that fits the conventions of horror. The wallpaper that i picked happened to be a dull coloured house with a 'possessed' girl in the middle just like in our title sequence. Ive followed the house colour theme of dull colours and red connoting danger and blood.
Blogging health check 2
- Ive managed to use various types of ICT such as Prezi, Emaze, gifs and powerpoint.
- I have managed to update my production schedule and in fact made a new one so that everything is clear and detailed.
Planning:change in character
In my group, originally, I (Cheinaz Cordeiro) was going to be the main character(protagonist) however, due to typical horror conventions. Ive decided that because i am a medium skin tone which isn't generally the skin colour of the protagonist in horror films, a white skin person is more preferred. This meant that i went on a look out and decided that my friend (Alice Pola) who fits the codes and conventions of a 'pale' girl, will make our title sequence more successful.
Planning: Pitch evaluation
PITCH EVALUATION
I've taken into consideration of all the feedback that i received from our pitch. Therefore, I've decided that we should have 3 targets in order to improve. Here is a quick recap of the feedback...
- The first thing that i wanted to do, to keep our film production successful is to stick by the production schedule. If this is done successfully, were not only have more time for editing and perfecting, but we will also have time for any improvements that need to be made.
- Ive also found that we will need to get all our props that we've listed on time such as fake blood, makeup etc.
- Ive also come to conclusion that i need to keep updated with the blogs, in order for me to be prepared for the deadlines.
Planning: Final production schedule
PRODUCTION SCHEDULE
Days; Everyone in our group doesn't have college on fridays therefor, filming production can be taken from 12am and onwards. We will probably film in downhills park, depending on the type of scenery we're looking for. This is so, the footage is filmed in the daylight as it gets dark soon.
Also, on the saturdays that everyone is free, we are able to film from 11am to around 5pm. The scenes that are going to be shot in a bedroom would have to be in cheinaz's house and therefor won't be a long journey as everyone lives quite near.
On tuesdays from 12.15am to 3.45pm we can film in the college's hallways as everyone is free in that time slot.
POSSIBLY START FILMING, THIS WEEK FRIDAY (25/11\16)

Planning: The use of Sound in Previous Students Title Sequences
students opening title:
review and analysis:
They've managed to use diegetic sound very clearly especially when the male writes, the phone rings and footsteps appear. I also found that they used different types of sound volumes which caused tension at some bits. However, I've noticed that even though they used a typical soundtrack of the horror genre, they didn't really use a lot of foley or non digetic and digetic sound. The lack of variety means that its not as good as it could have been.
- Overall, i think that this title sequence deserves a 5\10.
review and analysis:
I found that this title sequence used different sound effect effectually and used them wisely. They managed to incorporate every type of sound effects such as footsteps running which successfully established the 'thriller' genre. I really liked how this overlays well with with the over exaggerated, however there tends to be a slow pace in the background. One thing, that really got to me was the gun reveals and police sirens which contributes to the themes and codes and conventions of horror. This gave a sense of tension as those are signals of danger and predominately death.
- I would consider giving this a 10\10 rating.
Planning:Moodboard
House colour theme Mood board:
I've decided that mostly, our title sequence will be completely in black and white with elements of red to give it a more mysterious feel to it and as a result the audience would look for clues within the sequence instead of us giving it directly to them which would capture their attention and make it more successful. This adds to the genre of our film which is horror as black has negative connotations and is a mysterious colour associated with fear and the unknown. In addition red also connotes danger ad death which could be used as dramatic irony for the audience to find out clues.
Therefore I've created, mood boards in Microsoft Powerpoint in order to express my colour pattern.

Planning: Individual Ideas
MY INDIVIDUAL IDEA:
Ive been taking into consideration every single genre and I've come across to one that I've been very interested in. The genre of the film that caught my attention happened to be Horror. This is because its my favourite genre of film to watch but also because its a genre that most people enjoy and can have different reaction while watching. Ive come across many movies, however the one that really caught my attention is orphan as the protagonist appears to be one little innocent child while being a possessed 33 year old women.
Plot idea:
The film will be horror/action based about a girl (Alice pola) who faces a troubled life, as she is in a bad neighborhood, her horrors worsen and worsen, a gang of hoodlums are her terrors, being bullied, day in, day out, she decides to make the most horrifying decision of her life, SUICIDE. At the beginning, theres a innocent teenage girl who is generally considered 'unpopular' and as a result of being so quite, being bullied was the way people recognised her. She decides to make her return as a ghost and haunt her enemies and eventually leads them into a dark pathway just like they made her suffer.
Location:
Ive decided that there will be different locations in my film meaning that my opening title sequence will be mostly based around the streets of London. However some will be in the hallways of my college as well as toilets. Furthermore, we will also be filming some nature shots in the woods.
Props, costumes and makeup:
Props, costumes and makeup:
- Grey toned eyeshadows to create a dead appearance to the protagonist once she's a ghost and adds realism
- Fake blood
- White face paint in order to conceive a unhealthy look and to portray the idea that she doesn't have a soul
- kitchen knife as a symbol of the suicide thats taken place
- Dark clothes to add to the theme of horror
- Bare foot to give a sense of loneliness and isolation.
Inspiration:
- Orphan
- The Grudge
Soundscape:
I will use various types of sound such as diegetic e.g.footsteps or cracks and foley. I would want the sound to be very slow, almost as if someone is humming to portray a tense atmosphere. This would engage the audience as they'll be intrigued by what will happen next.
Characters:
- Murderer/Psychopath
- Victims that run away from her.

Research: Analyse the use of sound in one opening from horror.
Analyse the use of sound in orphan
In Orphans title sequence, there is a piano rhythm in the background, almost to lead up to tension. However it is very quit almost in the distance and in fact, the total opposite of dramatic. The fact that the music and the scenes are very slow, makes the audience think that a pop up will eventually happen, so therefor they stay concentrated on the images being presented on the screen. Overall this will make the title sequence, more successful, as more people would want to watch it due to the suspense. Also, there happens to be a lot of diegetic sound, such as liquid being spilled on the floor, giving the illusion that blood is dripping which creates a tense atmosphere. I also noticed that was a soundtrack of glass being cracked, which makes the audience question whether someone cracked it in order to create a sharp weapon. Finally, in the title sequence there happens to be wind sounds, almost to signify that no where is safe as, even in houses wind can enter. I will want my title sequence to be as creative and successful as 'Orphans' due to them presenting graphic yet ambiguous scenes which is what the audience looks for in a horror\thriller movie.
- the human voice
- sound effects
- music
These three tracks must be mixed and balanced so as to produce the necessary emphases which in turn create desired effects.
SOUND DESIGN: process of mixing, editing and creating sound for a film.
BACKGROUND MUSIC: is used to add emotion and rhythm to a film. Usually not meant to be noticeable, it often provides a tone or an emotional attitude toward the story and/or the characters epicted. In addition, background music often foreshadows a change in mood.
VOICE-OVER: A narration of a scene in the film
FOLEY; Foley is the reproduction of everyday sound effects that are added to film, video, and other media in post-production to enhance audio quality.
DIEGETIC SOUND: are from noises that are happening in the scene that haven’t been edited in, this means sounds like people talking or things like footsteps.
NON-DIEGETIC SOUND: sounds are sounds that have been added in, this can include things like music, a narration and sound effects. Non-diegetic sounds are often used to add drama to moments that would be silent without it.

Half Way Through Evaluation
I have finished off question 7, 1, 2 and 3 and will carry on with the others. I am using different type of presentation websites for example prezi, emaze, padlet and etc. I will focus more on visuals and making it easy for the viewer to read than writing a lot. I am also using gifs to give it a more attractive look and make it more visual.

SWOT Analyses
Strengths - Our groups main strength is that we have worked really hard on trying to find an idea for the film opening as well as looking at similar movies such as 'Purge' and came up with good ideas that match our genre, horror. We researched about different type of things the movie 'Purge' had to get an idea from it. Another strength of ours was that we spoke about each scene in detail making it easier for us to film this helped us in ways
such us not wasting time on talking about scenes while filming. One scene we discussed most about was when the victim hunts back the bullies and were we use a false plateau to shock the audience.
Weakness - One of our weaknesses is each individual in the group lives far away from each other so finding a location to film on a weekend is consumes a lot of time as we have to figure out what place is good as well as close to everyone in the group. Another weakness is that we have no evidence of planning or finding locations. Also having set dates to finish off work puts pressure on the group.
Opportunities - Working in a group gave me the opportunity to get close with people in my class and become friends with them as I like working with them. I also got the opportunity to learn new editing skills from my group and the teachers. Also using creative visual apps such as Prezi helps me to focus more on the visual to being creative and less writing.
Threats - I felt unconfident when writing blogs or wanting to write blogs because of not knowing what to write about as well as making it creative. Also as it is my first time editing I have no editing skills and the same for my group so we feel as that our film opening may be basic compared to peoples that have a little experience in editing.

Research and Planning- Evidence Audit.
Favourite previous student work- research
This title sequence is really good, because this hooks younger age groups between 13-18, as a 17 year old i could see why its engaging, the suspense of the title sequence builds up tension and the use of effects of the police sirens builds up on that as well. Also the camera angels were really good, an example of this is when they were running and they had to jump over the camera, causing the camera to shake, which also added to the suspense atmosphere.
