Research: Analyse the use of sound in one opening from horror.

Analyse the use of sound in orphan

In Orphans title sequence, there is a piano rhythm in the background, almost to lead up to tension. However it is very quit almost in the distance and in fact, the total opposite of dramatic. The fact that the music and the scenes are very slow, makes the audience think that a pop up will eventually happen, so therefor they stay concentrated on the images being presented on the screen. Overall this will make the title sequence, more successful, as more people would want to watch it due to the suspense. Also, there happens to be a lot of diegetic sound, such as liquid being spilled on the floor, giving the illusion that blood is dripping which creates a tense atmosphere. I also noticed that was a soundtrack of glass being cracked, which makes the audience question whether someone cracked it in order to create a sharp weapon. Finally, in the title sequence there happens to be wind sounds, almost to signify that no where is safe as, even in houses wind can enter. I will want my title sequence to be as creative and successful as 'Orphans' due to them presenting graphic yet ambiguous scenes which is what the audience looks for in a horror\thriller movie.

The entire sound track is comprised of three essential ingredients:
  • the human voice
  • sound effects
  • music
These three tracks must be mixed and balanced so as to produce the necessary emphases which in turn create desired effects.

SOUNDSCAPE: is the overall sound environment, what the sound is like as whole throughout the course of the film.

SOUND DESIGN: process of mixing, editing and creating sound for a film.

BACKGROUND MUSIC: is used to add emotion and rhythm to a film. Usually not meant to be noticeable, it often provides a tone or an emotional attitude toward the story and/or the characters epicted. In addition, background music often foreshadows a change in mood.

VOICE-OVER: A narration of a scene in the film

FOLEY; Foley is the reproduction of everyday sound effects that are added to film, video, and other media in post-production to enhance audio quality.

DIEGETIC SOUND: are from noises that are happening in the scene that haven’t been edited in, this means sounds like people talking or things like footsteps.

NON-DIEGETIC SOUND: sounds are sounds that have been added in, this can include things like music, a narration and sound effects. Non-diegetic sounds are often used to add drama to moments that would be silent without it.
